Ratings wins in key demographics at UFC on Fox 5 thrills Dana White

12 Dec

UFC president Dana White was in an extraordinary mood Tuesday thanks to the ratings his fight card on Fox delivered.

The UFC on Fox 5 card from Key Arena in Seattle improved the performance of UFC on Fox 4 by 83 percent and won all key male demographics in its time slot. The show attracted an average of 4.4 million viewers, doing a 2.5 household rating and a 4 share overall.

White pointed out that the UFC show trailed the Heisman Trophy ceremony and 48 Hours Mystery in its time slot in terms of total viewers, but UFC on Fox 5 finished as the No. 3 show for the week among males 18-49. In addition, it won the night among males 18-34, males 18-49, adults 18-34 and adults 18-49.

That younger demographic is what the UFC targets and is coveted by advertisers.

“We just killed it,” an ebullient White told Yahoo! Sports. “We killed it in every demo.”

The ratings increased during every fight. Matt Brown’s knockout of Mike Swick in the opener drew an average of 3.6 million viewers. That number increased to 4.3 million for Rory MacDonald’s beating of B.J. Penn. Alex Gustafsson’s victory over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had 4.5 million viewers, while the main event received an average of 5.7 million.

Though it was third in total viewers, White said what mattered most was the 18-34-year-old male demographic, which advertisers so desperately seek.

“There are always going to be older people home watching TV on a Saturday night,” White said. “But the advertisers are trying to reach that demo and we just dominated it. That was a huge night for us.”

Las Vegas was the top market with a 6.3 rating and 11 share. It was followed by Louisville (5.0/8), Sacramento (4.7/9), Columbus (4.6/8) and Phoenix (4.2/8).

The card drew the second-highest average viewership of the four shows on Fox in 2012. UFC on Fox 2 in January averaged 5.7 million viewers. UFC on Fox 5 on Saturday was at 4.4 million average. UFC on Fox 3 and UFC on Fox 4 each averaged 2.4 million viewers.

The next UFC card on Fox is on Jan. 26 in Chicago beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Demetrious Johnson defends the flyweight title against John Dodson in the main event.

NU Sweeps Washington to Advance to Regional Final

9 Dec

The fourth-seeded Nebraska volleyball team handed No. 13 seed Washington its only sweep of the season, defeating the Huskies 25-14, 25-21, 25-23 in front of 8,954 fans at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha on Friday in an NCAA Regional Semifinal.

With the win, the Huskers (26-6) advanced to Saturday?s NCAA Regional final against fifth-seeded Oregon, a 3-1 winner over No. 12 seed BYU in Friday?s first match. Saturday?s regional final, Nebraska?s first since 2009, is set for 5:30 p.m. (Central) and will air live nationally on ESPNU. Tickets are available for the match through Ticketmaster or by visiting the CenturyLink Center ticket office.

Washington ended its season with a 25-7 record.

Facing a physical Washington team, setter Lauren Cook led a balanced Husker attack that featured four players with at least seven kills. Nebraska, which hit .233 in the sweep, was led by Omaha native Gina Mancuso?s match-high 14 kills. Morgan Broekhuis and Hannah Werth added nine kills apiece and each hit at least .300, while Meghan Haggerty produced seven kills on 18 swings. Defensively, Werth produced 21 digs with a strong effort, while libero Lara Dykstra added 14 digs.

Washington was led by Krista Vansant?s 10 kills, while Kylin Munoz added seven kills. Defensively, the Huskies were out-dug 55-33 by Nebraska, but Washington out-blocked Nebraska 11-4, including a 10-0 advantage after the first set. Offensively, the Huskies hit .130, their fourth-lowest percentage of the season.

Set one was tight early, before Nebraska opened up an 11-7 lead with a 6-1 run. The run was fueled by a pair of kills and a solo block by Meghan Haggerty. After trading sideouts, Nebraska stretched the lead to 20-10 with seven straight points, including three consecutive Husker blocks. Following a service error, Nebraska won three straight points to cap a 10-1 run that put the Huskers in front 23-11. Haggerty then ended the 25-14 victory with her third kill of the set on Nebraska?s second set point. The Huskers featured a balanced offensive attack, as Broekhuis, Mancuso and Werth also had three kills in the set. Nebraska out-hit Washington .345-.028 in set one.

Nebraska kept its momentum by jumping out to a 6-1 lead in set two, forcing an early Washington timeout. Munoz recorded the Huskies? first kill of the set following the timeout, then served an ace to cut the lead to three. Three quick Nebraska points stretched the lead to six before Washington trimmed the lead to 16-13 and the Huskers answered by pushing the lead back to six. But after a Washington sideout, Nebraska committed three consecutive hitting errors, including a pair of UW blocks, as the Huskies trimmed the lead to two at 19-17 and forcing a Husker timeout. Mancuso delivered back-to-back kills following the timeout, fueling a 5-2 run that gave Nebraska a 24-18 lead. Washington fought off three match points before a Broekhuis kill delivered a 25-21 win for the Huskers. Washington out-hit the Huskers .176-.154 in the set and out-blocked NU 6-0, but Nebraska produced nine more kills than the Huskies. Mancuso totaled six kills in the set, two fewer than Washington?s team total.

In set three, Nebraska won four of five rallies to take an early 5-2 advantage. Washington came back strong, using a 5-1 run to take a one-point lead. Neither team led by more than two until UW won four straight rallies to earn a 14-10 lead. The Huskies continued to lead by four until a 7-1 Nebraska run gave the Huskers a 19-17 lead and forced Washington into calling both of its timeouts. NU stretched the lead to three, before back-to-back Huskie points trimmed the lead to 21-20. Washington then pulled even at 22, forcing Nebraska to use its final timeout. A Mancuso kill and Washington net violation then gave Nebraska two match points at 24-22. The Huskies fended off one match point, before Broekhuis ended the match with her seventh kill.

Give the gift of better apps for Apple’s iOS

3 Dec

3 hrs.

Have a family member who also loves their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch? If so, you won’t find a better gift for them than a few apps to make that experience better.?

Here are some of our favorite (and your favorite) paid apps for holiday giving.?

MEDIA

Downcast
If you have a podcast lover on your gift list, you won’t find a better app than Downcast. It puts every other podcast manager to shame with automated downloading, excellent data management, and the ability to add and sync new podcasts on the fly.

It has a ton of other great features as well. Simply put, Downcast blows Apple’s solution out of the water and is easily the best gift you could give to a podcast fanatic.

Panamp
For the music lover on your list, a new music player might be the perfect fit. While the default player is just fine for most people, music addicts might prefer something with a bit more function or flash. If your gift recipient wants some more features, specifically the ability to create solid playlists from anywhere, Panamp is one of the best choices out there.?

It does everything the regular music app does, but it does it better. For people looking for a whole new way to browse their music, both Track 8 and in:play are worth a look for their drastically different design and user experience. Either way, a new way to listen to music is always fun, and all three of these choices are solid.

Plex
Have a media lover on your list? Than one of the best apps you can give them is one that gives them access to their entire library no matter where they are. Plex is fantastic at this. With Plex running on their home computer they’ll be able to stream music, photos, and videos directly to their iPhone through a Wi-Fi connection or cellular network. If Plex doesn’t sound like it’ll suit their needs, then StreamToMe is a similar option that might work better. Both are great apps that’ll make their media-filled lives a little more joyful.

PHOTO AND VIDEO

Camera+
We adore Camera+ because it’s hands down the most useful, incredible camera for the iPhone. Even if someone on your list is just an amateur photographer who occasionally snaps a picture of the family dinner, Camera+ will help make those pictures look better. It offers ways to improve bad pictures, reduce camera shake, add filters, and the all-important camera timer for those holiday pictures with all the family.

iMovie
If you have a budding film director on your gift list, iMovie is a great choice for editing on the go. Sure, it’s not as sophisticated as a desktop editor, but iMovie is perfect for those who just want to trim up their home movies so they’re presentable.?

The best part is that it’s simple enough to use that anyone can pick it up and start editing video right away. If you’re sick of getting videos from someone that are chopped up or too long, iMovie might just be the perfect gift.

PRODUCTIVITY AND UTILITIES

OmniFocus
For the person on your list who loves to organize and create to-do lists, you’ll need to pick out a good organization app. You have?a ton of different choices. If you want to pick up something that does absolutely everything,?

OmniFocus is a favorite amongst the organization obsessed. If you’re looking for something simpler, Checkmark is?an amazing location-based reminder app, Clear keeps?things simple and elegant, and Toodledo fits somewhere in the middle of all those.

It really depends on what type of person you’re shopping for, but rest assured you’ll be able to find something perfect for them in the App Store.

iWork
iWork is a collection of some of the best software Apple has for iOS. Each of the programs are nearly just as powerful as their desktop counterparts, and they’re incredibly easy to use. Pages is a simple way to write and edit documents on the go, while Numbers makes it so you can work on spreadsheets no matter where you are. The real standout is Keynote, which not only allows you to easily create presentations, but also show them off without having to lug around a laptop.

Sparrow
For the Gmail lover on your list, you’re not going to find a better email manager than Sparrow. It not only allows you to do simple Gmail functions like add labels and tags, but it’s also slick and easy to use. The best thing about Sparrow is that it feels like you’re actually in Gmail, but you don’t have to work with Google’s lackluster Gmail app. If you have someone on your list who desperately needs a better email app, Sparrow is a perfect fit.

Screens
Have someone on your list who loves to control their desktop remotely? Then Screens?is the best iOS remote desktop app out there. What makes Screens stand out is the fact it’s incredibly easy to use, but still powerful enough that it does everything you’d expect from a remote desktop app. It’s the perfect app for anyone you know who’s constantly complaining about not having access to their home computer when they’re on the go.

Sleep Cycle
If?you have someone on your list who has been struggling to get enough sleep (or has been getting too much), Sleep Cycle is a great app that can track their sleep habits and help them figure out what’s going on. It won’t magically get them a good night’s rest, but it can help figure out what’s wrong. It’ll also wake them up during an optimal sleep state, which is a handy feature for anyone you know who seems a little groggy in the morning.

Launch Center Pro
Launch Center Pro is the closest thing iPhone users can get to a customized launch center. It’s perfect for anyone on your list who always complains about it taking too long to launch or find apps. At its core, Launch Center Pro offers up a ton of shortcuts to directly launch apps and specific actions within many of them (for instance, you can launch directly into the Instagram camera, or call your Mom directly). It’s a great app for anyone who loves shortcuts and making things a bit simpler.

Drafts
For the constant note taker on your list, you have about a billion different options to choose from in the App Store. That said, we love the versatility and usability of Drafts. Drafts also makes a perfect gift because it can send out notes to pretty much every cloud and notes service you can think of, including Dropbox, Evernote, Simplenote, and elsewhere. Another fantastic option is Notesy, which syncs with Dropbox, and also supports TextExpander and Markdown to make typing on an iPhone easier.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who provided suggestions! It made putting together these guides a lot easier, and a better fit for you.

Childhood trauma leaves mark on DNA of some victims: Gene-environment interaction causes lifelong dysregulation of stress hormones

3 Dec

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2012) ? Abused children are at high risk of anxiety and mood disorders, as traumatic experience induces lasting changes to their gene regulation. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich have now documented for the first time that genetic variants of the FKBP5 gene can influence epigenetic alterations in this gene induced by early trauma.

In individuals with a genetic predisposition, trauma causes long-term changes in DNA methylation leading to a lasting dysregulation of the stress hormone system. As a result, those affected find themselves less able to cope with stressful situations throughout their lives, frequently leading to depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or anxiety disorders in adulthood. Doctors and scientists hope these discoveries will yield new treatment strategies tailored to individual patients, as well as increased public awareness of the importance of protecting children from trauma and its consequences.

Many human illnesses arise from the interaction of individual genes and environmental influences. Traumatic events, especially in childhood, constitute high risk factors for the emergence of psychiatric illnesses in later life. However, whether early stress actually leads to a psychiatric disorder depends largely on his or her genetic predisposition.

Research Group Leader Elisabeth Binder of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry examined the DNA of almost 2000 Afro-Americans who had been repeatedly and severely traumatised as adults or in childhood. One-third of trauma victims had become ill and was now suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder rose with increasing severity of abuse only in the carriers of a specific genetic variant in the FKBP5 gene. FKPB5 determines how effectively the organism can react to stress, and by this regulates the entire stress hormone system. The scientists hoped to cast light on the mechanisms of this gene-environment interaction by comparing modifications of the DNA sequence of victims who had not become ill with that of those who had.

The Munich-based Max Planck scientists were then able to demonstrate that the genetic FKBP5 variant does make a physiological difference to those affected, also in nerve cells. Extreme stress and the associated high concentrations of stress hormones bring about what is called an epigenetic change. A methyl group is broken off the DNA at this point, causing a marked increase in FKBP5 activity. This lasting epigenetic change is generated primarily through childhood traumatisation. Consequently, no disease-related demethylation of the FKBP5 gene was detected in participants who were traumatised in adulthood only.

Torsten Klengel, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, explains the findings of the study as follows: “Depending on genetic predisposition, childhood trauma can leave permanent epigenetic marks on the DNA, further de-repressing FKBP5 transcription. The consequence is a permanent dysregulation of the victim’s stress hormone system, which can ultimately lead to psychiatric illness. Decisive for victims of childhood abuse, however, is that the stress-induced epigenetic changes can only occur if their DNA has a specific sequence.”

This recent study improves our understanding of psychiatric illnesses which arise from the interaction of environmental and genetic factors. The results will help tailor treatment particularly for patients who were exposed to trauma in early childhood, thereby greatly increasing their risk of illness.

3 Love Lessons From Les Mis?rables | Rachel Kleinman | YourTango

3 Love Lessons From Les Mis?rables
Anne Hathaway gives the performance of her career as Fantine in Les Mis.

Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway bring Broadway to the big screen in an unforgettable film.

I could gush all day about the 2012 film adaptation of Les Mis?rables. It’s everything a movie musical should be. The film itself is like a love letter from the director (Tom Hooper) to the musical’s original creators that says: Your work is perfection on stage. Let’s do it justice on film. And he succeeded.

More from YourTango: NYPD Hottie With A Heart Of Gold: Will You Marry Us?

But alas, this isn’t a review, so I’ll refrain from gushing and introduce instead three of the film’s most poignant love lessons:

1. Check yourself.?The next time you get all self-pitying about your love life (Why hasn’t he texted me yet?!), consider a small dose of Les Mis. Once you hear Fantine’s (played by Anne Hathway) gutwrenching tale of lost love in the show-stopping ballad “I Dreamed A Dream”, your petty problems will fall instantly into perspective … that is, unless you also lost your job as an 1823 French factory worker when you were outed for having an illegitimate child and were subsequently relegated to a life of prostitution that consumed your soul and ultimately ended your life. No? Okay then.

2. Love isn’t fair. What better way to tug at an audiences’ heartstrings than to tell them a tale of unrequited love? Among the all-time saddest of these stories comes from ?ponine (Samantha Barks), who pours her heart out about her feelings for Marius (Eddie Redmayne) while walking down a cobblestone street alone in the rain singing “On My Own.” And while the drama of ‘Ponine’s storyline is amplified by the film’s overall context of poverty and revolution, it remains sadly realistic as well. After all, who among us hasn’t felt the sting of unreciprocated affection at some point in our lives?

3. Don’t sell yourself short. Got feelings for someone who’s “way out of your league?” Don’t give up hope. Just look at Marius and Cosette (Amanda Seyfried). One day she’s just a poor, orphan sweeping the floor of an inn, and the next, she’s married to Marius, the French aristocrat-turned-revolutionary who bears a striking resemblance to Prince Harry of Wales. I mean, sure, she’s stunningly beautiful and has the warbling voice of an angel. Still, theirs is the story of an unlikely couple making it work despite all odds being stacked against them. So, the next time that insecure adolescent in your head tells you you aren’t good enough for some guy, snag a little inspiration from Cosette.

S.Africa’s rand hits two-week high on fiscal cliff optimism

1 Dec

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South Africa‘s rand rallied to a two-week high on Thursday on hopes that U.S. policymakers would reach an agreement to reduce the debt pile of the world’s biggest economy.

The rand was at 8.7690 to the dollar at 1550 GMT on Thursday, 0.5 percent stronger than Wednesday’s New York close, after reaching a high of 8.7470 earlier in the session.

The currency has traded within a narrow 8.80-9.00 band in the last two weeks and failed to break free even after a deal on Monday by Greece’s international lenders to reduce the country’s debt.

Hopes that President Barack Obama‘s administration and Congressional leaders would reach a deal to avert the “fiscal cliff” before the January 1 deadline lifted world equities and commodities on Thursday, as well as the rand.

“International sentiment is good surrounding the ability for the fiscal cliff to be resolved,” said one trader. “Unless we have bad news surrounding the negotiations around the fiscal cliff I think we can probably strengthen a bit further.”

South African producer inflation rose to 5.2 percent year-on-year in October, from 4.2 percent in September, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters forecast a rise to 4.8 percent.

Government bonds were firmer, with the yield on the 2026 instrument declining 2 basis points to 7.565 percent and that on the 2015 paper falling 1.5 basis points to 5.47 percent.
